Was young singer Jackie lip-synching on 'AGT?' 11 august 2010 - NJ.Com by Len Melisurgo. |
It didn't take long for the YouTube video clip of Jackie Evancho's amazing performance on "America's Got Talent" to go viral. It didn't take long for writers and readers to compare Jackie Evancho to "Britain's Got Talent" superstar Susan Boyle. It also didn't take long for the criticism, skepticism and personal attacks to start flying across the internet. You might be wondering: How could anyone say anything bad about a sweet little 10-year-old girl who has the voice of an angel? Well.... thanks to all those hate-mongers out there, and thanks to the anonymous world of online message boards, people started attacking little Jackie Evancho for all sorts of reasons just hours after she appeared on national television, drew a standing ovation in the Hollywood theater and mesmerized millions of viewers watching at home last night. Can't anyone sit back for a few moments and enjoy something for what it is: good entertainment? Can't anyone let this little girl enjoy her big moment in the spotlight? Why do so many people feel compelled to attack this innocent kid?. Plenty of hate-mongers out there have questioned whether Jackie Evancho was lip-synching during her live AGT performance last night. They claim her mouth movement and breathing patterns were not lining up perfectly with the audio on their television sets. "This was a phony performance, this child was not singing," a poster named Cheryl wrote on People.com. "She was lip syncing, look carefully at her mouth, and her voice at 10 would never sound like that, no matter what!!! What a farce this show is!!!". In a telephone interview this afternoon, an NBC representative who was at last night's performance told The Star-Ledger that Jackie Evancho definitely was NOT lip-synching. The little girl was indeed singing into the microphone, the network rep said. Other hate-mongers out there have started attacking Jackie's parents -- and they don't even know them. "Is this a 'prodigy' that was born with the gift, or simply another case of parents seeing a talent in their child and pushing the child through so many lessons and so many hours of practicing…" asked one anonymous reader who posted a comment on Entertainment Weekly's website. "Yes, her package stated she saw 'Phantom' and wanted to sing, but it 'conveniently' didn't state how much she practiced." Some hate-mongers wrote they found Jackie to be "creepy," and others called her "freaky," because she happens to be a young child who has the voice of a mature woman. Luckily, Jackie is getting support from her many fans. One reader posted this comment on the New York Daily News website today: "Joy in the form of a 10 year old girl who sings like an angel. It's a beautiful thing." Another Daily News poster had this to say: "OMG...MY WHOLE FAMILY CRIED..TRULY WONDERFUL." |
