Jackie nervous awaiting results of Talent finale
15 september 2010 - Pittsburgh Tribune Review by Kyle Lawson.

Jackie Evancho is the odds-on favorite to win the $1 million prize and national tour on "America's Got Talent" tonight. But you can't convince the Richland phenom. "I'm nervous," Evancho, 10, said after her big performance last night in the NBC show's final competition. "Everyone did such a good job in what they do. Whenever I sing, I don't think I'm as good as them." The show will announce the winner among Jackie and three fellow finalists during tonight's broadcast from 8 to 10 p.m.

The public will decide who wins. But the show's judges raved about her rendition of "Ave Maria". "She appeals to all comers," said Piers Morgan, who added he thinks Jackie could easily sell 10 million records and enjoy a 40-year career. "You never know how people grow up, but she has a good mom and good people around her. She's down to earth, polite and unaffected by everything going on around her."

"It doesn't seem right calling you Jackie. You're a little angel," said fellow judge Sharon Osbourne, adding that she knows how difficult "Ave Maria" is to sing. "You sang it beautifully, and you sang it with emotion. What can I say, little angel?"

Jackie told host Nick Cannon that she's had to make sacrifices to prepare for the show such as not going to school with her friends, not seeing her family as much as she would like and not sleeping in."But it's been worth it," she said before she sang. "Here I am as a finalist. My dream is to perform. It's so close right now."

Jackie is creating fans. Audience member Megan Avenil, 18, of Los Angeles didn't listen to classical crossover until she heard Jackie. "I would listen to anything she's singing," Avenil said. "She carries herself very well."

Tonight, Jackie gets to meet her idol and fellow classical crossover singer Sarah Brightman during part two of the finale. "I want to ask her how she deals with all of the stress," Jackie said.

Jackie and the producers developed an angelic theme for her performances, which have included robed choirs backing her. The supporting voices make the performance feel "not as daring," because her voice has company, she said. "It's fun singing with people around you." Last night's performance was sad, Jackie said, because she loves to sing in front of people. She'll get that chance to continue regardless of tonight's winner.

The show's 25-city tour, featuring the top 10 acts, is scheduled from Oct. 1 to Nov. 7, including a show at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas. Detroit or Columbus are the closest options for Jackie's hometown fans. The fifth-grader's poise on live television surprised entertainment experts as much as her voice. Actor-comedian-rapper Cannon noted Jackie knows the right things to say — and what she says surprises even her parents sometimes.

"You never know what's coming out of that girl's mouth," her father, Mike Evancho said. "That's why we refuse to coach her on what to say." Pop opera singer and 2008 "America's Got Talent" winner Neal E. Boyd followed repeats of the show on the Internet and said he's proud to see two operatic singers in the final four. "I think Jackie's got a shot," Boyd said. "I don't know Jackie's (life) story, but if she wins, I hope she can take the money and pay for her future."
