Jackie Evancho sings with the Colorado Symphony 31 october 2012 - Denver Post By Ray Mark Rinaldi. |
Jackie Evancho is just like any other 12-year-old on the planet. Except for the platinum albums and the TV appearances and the worldwide concert tours. She loves animals, goes to school — though it’s cyberschool online — and hangs with her siblings back in the Pittsburgh area when she can. It’s a balancing act, being an adolescent superstar, but she actually sounds balanced. “I know my life is different than a lot of other kids’, and a lot of people think of me as different,” Evancho said over the telephone this week, preparing for a tour that includes a gig with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra on Monday night. “But I just think of myself as a normal kid who likes to sing. I don’t even see the good voice in myself sometimes.” Normal means she likes pop stars Lady Gaga, Maroon 5 and Dev. It means she likes “chick flicks,” as she puts it, and the “Twilight” movies. She’s daring enough to watch the television series “The Walking Dead” even though, she acknowledges, “I am very terrified of a lot things.” But not every American kid has headlined a solo show at Carnegie Hall or counts Tokyo as her favorite city: “I love it because it’s so cultural, it has such nice architecture.” She recently performed with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra there. Evancho’s success is holistic and wholly new millennium. She came to the world’s attention via YouTube and reality TV. She’s the ultimate crossover artist, mixing up popular classical and classic pop; she’s as likely to sing Puccini as she is Elton John, as likely to pop up on a PBS fundraiser as she is to guest on “Dancing with the Stars”. The tie that binds it all together is Evancho’s angelic and appealing instrument. She’s blessed with purity of tone, which she embellishes with a natural confidence. It helps that she’s pretty and polite, full of pleases and thank yous, whether she’s talking to a journalist or Kathie Lee Gifford. “I never lack confidence,” she says. Just like any other 12-year-old. |
