Jackie Evancho keeps busy pace after turning 18
5 october 2018 - Daily Republic by Amy Maginnis-Honey.

America fell in love with 10-year-old Jackie Evancho when she competed on NBC’s “America’s Got Talent”. Evancho is now an 18-year-old with a pretty hectic life. “Life has changed a lot,” she said in a phone interview. “I travel a lot. It’s kind of a drag now. I do it so much”.

The upside is she has seen a lot of places and met a lot of people. She comes to the Vacaville Performing Arts Theatre later this month. What can the audience expect? “My show is basically a songbook of my favorites and my fan favorites,” she said.

She’ll throw in some surprise songs to keep the audience on their toes. Evancho will also interact with the audience. “I love to tell them stories. I love to have fans get to know me better,” she said. There have been a few times that fan encounters were unpleasant.

Fans have come up to her car and tried to open the door. Security pulls them back, she said. “People also show up at my house,” she said. “And, people are taking photos of my house.” Evancho began singing after watching “Phantom of the Opera”.

An attraction to dark romances piqued her interest in the show. With the addition of the beautiful music, it was irresistible to the young Pittsburgh native. “I fell in love with it immediately,” she said.

Before long, she was showcasing her vocals at talent shows, where she earned praise and a following. Evancho also began singing at nursing homes and churches. She enrolled herself in voice lessons while still in grade school.

Prior to “America’s Got Talent”, she participated in the Hitman Talent Search Contest and caught the attention of music producer David Foster. Considered a crossover classic singer, Evancho also pens tunes. They are rooted in “truth in any sense of the word,” she said. “I want to be able to be the most real person I can be. Not just for fans but for myself”.

She’s collaborated with Foster and Tony Bennett, to name a few. A duet with actor Will Ferrell would be the icing on the cake, she said. He sang, “Por ti Volare” in the 2008 film “Step Brothers.” She sings the same tune. “It would be such a good moment if I sang with him,” she said.

When Evancho isn’t touring, performing or writing, she loves to paint and draw. Bonding with her family and the family pets is something she also enjoys. Reaching her 18th birthday hasn’t changed life much. “It doesn’t really feel much different from being 17,” she said. “I have more control over my management. I’ve enjoyed getting into the nitty gritty bits of what goes on in my life”.

Evancho is working on a new album. She’s unsure of the release date, but promised it would be “really interesting and different from anything I’ve done. And, unexpected.”
