Jackie Evancho – the little girl with the great big voice and the busy holiday calendar – is a hometown girl to Pine-Richland.

The 10-year-old opera singer startled the world earlier this year when she appeared on NBC's "America's Got Talent". Placing second in that competition, she enthralled audiences who heard the gigantic voice of an adult pour from the body of a slight, blonde, blue-eyed little girl with an angelic face and sweet demeanor. She appeared on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" Wednesday and is scheduled to appear Christmas Eve on a "Fox and Friends Christmas Special", then on the "Disney Parks Christmas Day Parade" TV special on ABC, according to her website.

On New Year's Day, Jackie will sing "The Star Spangled Banner" before the 1 p.m. start of the 2011 NHL Winter Classic outdoor hockey game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Washington Capitals at Heinz Field.

"O Holy Night" that it catapulted her Christmas CD/DVD of the same name into the No. 2 slot on Billboard's charts when it was released in mid-November.

She's been so busy of late that she and her family could not be reached for comment. But Rachel Hathhorn, director of communications for the Pine-Richland School District, keeps the community aware of her performances through releases and the district's newsletters.

"Jackie Evancho is a shining star here in Pine-Richland, so we're pleased to see her succeed," Hathhorn said. "Jackie Evancho's success has certainly brought a lot of attention to Pine-Richland. We have received calls from around the world. Early on, the district received a call from an opera school in Italy," she added. "We know she will continue to amaze everyone. Her entire family is very talented."

Jackie rose to international attention in the summer with her shock-and-awe-generating performances on "America's Got Talent".

Since then, she's performed on "Oprah", "The Today Show", for the tree-lighting ceremony at New York's Rockefeller Center, and the lighting of the National Christmas Tree in Washington, D.C., where she met President Barack Obama and his family.

But that incredible voice is not new to the Pine-Richland community. She competed locally in the annual talent show organized by St. Barnabas Charities and performed at its Kean Theatre. Jackie was crowned the Kean Idol before America ever started looking for talent … on the NBC show, anyway.
