Jackie Evancho’s triumphant return
3 september 2023 - The Thaiger by Kiara Addington

Emerging from the shadows of her past struggles with an eating disorder and the relentless pressures of stardom, former child prodigy and singing sensation, Jackie Evancho, is making a triumphant return to the music scene. The youngest solo artist to ever claim a platinum record, and a former star of “America’s Got Talent”, Evancho is set to release a new single named “Behind My Eyes”. This time, however, the 23-year-old is taking a departure from the classical tunes and opera arias of her past, venturing instead into the realm of alt-pop.

“My songwriting these days touches upon mental illness and issues that are on the darker side, which will shock a lot of people who know me from before,” Evancho shared with The Post. This shift in tone and subject matter mirrors the personal growth and self-discovery Evancho has been navigating since her early rise to fame at just 9 years old.

Evancho’s initial foray into the music industry was marked by her stunning performances on Season 5 of “America’s Got Talent” where she captivated audiences and finished second. Her soulful renditions of “O Mio Babbino Caro”, and “Time To Say Goodbye” won the hearts of America, setting her on a path of success that saw her collaborating with industry giants like David Foster and performing at notable events, including Donald Trump’s 2017 Presidential inauguration.

However, the decision to perform at Trump’s inauguration would prove to be a controversial one, igniting backlash and casting a shadow over Evancho’s career. “I said ‘Yes’ because I was singing for my country,” Evancho explained. “But it hurt my career and it just sucks because, as a 16-year-old, I perceived it as an honour”. Beyond the controversy, Evancho also grappled with the intense pressures of growing up in the spotlight. The relentless work schedule and the constant scrutiny over her appearance led her to develop anorexia. Despite attempting to manage her weight healthily, Evancho found herself spiralling, often going days without eating.

Her struggle with anorexia would eventually lead to early onset osteoporosis, a diagnosis revealed following a car accident in 2021. Evancho has since been working towards recovery, embracing therapy and sharing her experiences to support others who may be facing similar battles.

Part of Evancho’s healing process has been channeling her experiences into her music. One such song, “Get Out of My Life”, confronts the pressure she felt to be perfect. “The song’s basically me saying, ‘I’ve had enough. I really tried, and I can’t keep doing it anymore, so get out of my life’”.

Now residing in Manhattan’s Upper West Side, Evancho is discovering her musical identity and making independent decisions about her life and career. She’s signed with a new record label, Melody Place, and her foray into alt-pop has garnered an overwhelmingly positive response from her loyal fan base.

Evancho’s past achievements include dethroning Michael Jackson as the youngest star on the Billboard charts with her “O Holy Night” album and being mentored by legendary record producer David Foster. She has expressed gratitude for her time on “America’s Got Talent,” acknowledging the platform it provides for emerging talents.

As Evancho continues to evolve and redefine her career, her journey serves as a poignant testament to the trials and triumphs of growing up in the spotlight. Her new musical ventures promise a raw, authentic exploration of her personal experiences, marking a compelling new chapter in her journey.
